This section covers introductory material relating to the Center's Core Research, Physical and Social Science, Technology, and Professional Competency Areas, which each cohort fellow is required to demonstrate a benchmarked level of understanding within the first year of the fellowship. The material in the section are intended to provide basic knowledge of core competency areas at the Center for Earth System Sciences and Remote Sensing Technologies -II (CESSRST-II) and their applications at NOAA. The exception to this list the Responsible Conduct of Research (RCR) training, which covers research ethics broadly and requires each CESSRST-II fellow to submit a certificate of completion within the first 60 days of the fellowship. Each of module is accompanied by an assessment of knowledge based on the material covered. For each competency area, fellows are required to meet the assessment benchmark of 80% or greater overall.

This workshop series contains 4 learning modules and was designed to support your learning of beginner level concepts in AI/ML. As you know, as a NOAA-EPP/MSI CESSRST-II fellow and hopeful future NOAA workforce participant, you are required to demonstrate levels of competencies in a number of areas, including AI/ML subject matter in general and well as it relates to the NOAA Mission. To help you prepare to demonstrate competency, the Center developed these modules in collaboration with subject matter experts (SMEs) from one of our CESSRST-II partner institutions and NOAA. All four modules are available for your review, followed by a brief assessment after each. The first three modules were delivered live on zoom on April 28, 2023 by either Professor Hernan Moreno, Assistant Professor in the Department of Earth, Environmental and Resource Sciences University of Texas at El Paso or Rob Redmon, NOAA Center for AI (NCAI) Lead. The fourth module is a pre-recorded session on responsible and ethical AI from an NCAI closing plenary.
